PUBG vs Apex Legends: the battle royales that refuse to die

Both shipped years ago and both still pull big concurrent audiences. We compare what you get from each game in 2026 and which one fits your group.

Both of these games invented mechanics the rest of the genre copied. They are both free to play. Both still ship updates. Both have stable, large concurrent audiences years after launch. So which one should you actually queue?

Live counts

Check the PUBG page and the Apex Legends page for tonight's numbers. PUBG runs hot on weekday evenings in Asia. Apex peaks during US prime time and on weekends.

Core difference: movement and TTK

PUBG plays slower. Engagements happen at longer ranges. Crossing 200 meters of open field while crouched is a real moment in PUBG. The time-to-kill is short once you are spotted, so the game rewards patience.

Apex plays faster. The movement system rewards momentum: slide jumps, tap strafes, wall bounces. TTK is longer because everyone has shields. A fight that opens at 30 meters in PUBG would close to 5 meters in Apex inside ten seconds.

Signal PUBG Apex Legends
TTK Short, gun-skill heavy Longer, movement matters
Squad size 1, 2, 4 Mostly 3
Vehicles Many None
Heroes None, character is gear-only Yes, full roster
Skill ceiling Aim + positioning Aim + movement + character knowledge

What it costs you to start

Both are free. PUBG sells skins and an optional battle pass. Apex sells skins, a battle pass, and a heirloom system that is genuinely expensive if you want a specific cosmetic.

Neither requires payment for competitive parity. Aim, positioning, and team comms decide every game.

Sticky after 100 hours

PUBG stays sticky for players who like the feeling of one good gunfight per match. The slower pace means whole rounds can pass without seeing anyone, which some players love and others quit over.

Apex stays sticky for players who like skill expression and rapid resets. A bad round in Apex takes 4 minutes; a bad round in PUBG can take 25.

Choose this if

  • You want to feel like you are in a war movie: PUBG.
  • You want fast resets, character mains, and movement tech: Apex.
